Before You Shock Your Pool… Read and Watch This First
Shocking your pool may seem simple, but doing it the wrong way — or at the wrong time — can waste chemicals and still leave you with cloudy or green water.
1. Test Your Water First
Before shocking your pool, always test your water chemistry. If your pH or alkalinity levels are off, shock may not work properly.
- Check pH before adding shock
- Make sure alkalinity is balanced
- Know your chlorine level before treatment
Bring a water sample into one of our E-Z Test Pool Supplies locations for professional water testing and recommendations.
2. Shock at Dusk or Night
Sunlight can quickly burn off chlorine, especially during hot summer days. Shocking your pool during the day can reduce effectiveness and waste product.
For best results, shock your pool at dusk or in the evening while your pump is running.
3. Run Your Pool Pump
Always run your filtration system while shocking the pool. Proper circulation helps distribute chemicals evenly and improves results.
We recommend running your pump during treatment and for several hours afterward to help maximize water clarity and sanitizer performance.
4. Don’t Swim Right Away
After shocking your pool, chlorine levels may temporarily become too high for swimming. Always follow the product directions and wait until chlorine returns to a safe level before getting back in the water.
5. Green or Cloudy Water May Need More Than Shock
If your pool is green, cloudy, or losing chlorine quickly, shock alone may not fully solve the problem. The issue could be low stabilizer, poor circulation, high phosphates, algae growth, or dirty filters.
That’s why professional water testing makes all the difference.
