How to Clear a Cloudy Pool Fast Using Liquid Chlorine and Flocculant
Nothing ruins pool season faster than cloudy water. If you’ve shocked your pool, cleaned your filter, and still can’t see the bottom, you may be dealing with suspended particles that are too small for your filter to remove.
In severe cases, using liquid chlorine and a flocculant can quickly restore water clarity by forcing fine particles to settle to the bottom of the pool where they can be vacuumed away.
Why Is My Pool Still Cloudy?
Cloudy pool water is commonly caused by:
- Dead algae after shocking
- Fine dust and dirt particles
- Pollen and organic debris
- Heavy swimmer loads
- Poor filtration
- Unbalanced water chemistry
- Rainstorms and runoff
- High summer temperatures that quickly consume chlorine
When these particles become suspended in the water, your filter may struggle to remove them, leaving your pool looking dull, hazy, or completely cloudy.
What Is Pool Flocculant?
Pool flocculant, often called “floc,” works by binding tiny suspended particles together into larger clumps. These heavier particles sink to the bottom of the pool, allowing them to be vacuumed directly to waste.
This process is especially effective when standard filtration and clarifiers are not producing results.
What You’ll Need
Before starting, gather the following:
- 12.5% Liquid Chlorine
- Liquid Flocculant
- Pool vacuum
- Filter system capable of vacuuming to waste
Step 1: Raise the Pool Water Level
Before adding any chemicals, raise the water level approximately 2 to 3 inches above normal operating level.
Since you’ll be vacuuming to waste later, you’ll lose water during the cleanup process. Starting with a higher water level helps prevent the skimmer from running dry.
Step 2: Shock with Liquid Chlorine
Add approximately:
1 gallon of 12.5% liquid chlorine per 10,000 gallons of pool water
Example Dosages

| 30,000 Gallons | 3 Gallons |
Liquid chlorine is preferred because it raises chlorine levels quickly and helps oxidize contaminants that may be contributing to cloudy water.
Step 3: Add the Flocculant
Wait approximately 30 minutes after adding the liquid chlorine.
Then add:
1 quart of flocculant per 30,000 gallons of pool water
Pour the product evenly around the perimeter of the pool while the pump is running.
Always follow the manufacturer’s label instructions for the specific flocculant being used.
Step 4: Run the Pump for Two Hours
Allow the circulation system to run for approximately 2 hours to distribute the chemicals throughout the pool.
After two hours, turn the pump completely off.
Step 5: Let the Pool Settle
Leave the pool undisturbed for approximately 12 hours.
During this time, the flocculant will pull suspended particles out of the water and drop them to the bottom of the pool.
You may notice a layer of fine white, gray, or brown sediment covering the floor of the pool.
Step 6: Vacuum to Waste
Once the particles have settled, vacuum the pool floor using the Waste setting on your filter system.
Important Tips
- Vacuum slowly and carefully.
- Avoid stirring up the settled debris.
- Do not vacuum through the filter.
- Refill the pool as needed during the process.
Vacuuming to waste removes the debris completely rather than sending it back through the filtration system.

When performed correctly, this process can dramatically improve water clarity within a day.
It is particularly effective for:
- Extremely cloudy water
- Dead algae cleanup

- Post-storm cleanup

How to Prevent Cloudy Pool Water
The best way to avoid cloudy water is through regular maintenance:
- Test your water weekly
- Maintain proper chlorine levels
- Keep pH between 7.2 and 7.6
- Clean your filter regularly
- Run your pump long enough each day
- Remove debris promptly
- Shock the pool when needed
